The Company
Interlink Building Systems are one of the UK’s largest manufacturers of modular buildings for hire or sale. The company have chosen SMT to provide the structured cabling for a range of modular building projects.
Modular manufacture
Modules are manufactured in the company’s own controlled factory environment. This method
alleviates the delays and problems associated with traditional building techniques such as inclement weather, materials and labour shortages. With a wide variety of uses from school classrooms, emergency accommodation to temporary and permanent offices and construction site accommodation, modular buildings are a very popular and flexible option for a wide variety of organisation. Based in the East Riding of Yorkshire, Interlink Building Systems manufacture modular buildings to the very highest specification using the most innovative design and production processes in the industry. In order to provide a modern, efficient and convenient business environment ready for clients to ‘site down’ and start work.
Recent projects
Recent projects have included the new Greater London Authority, Berkeley Home in Chelsea, London Bridge, Stockley Park, Albion Wharf, Paternoster Square and the Wellcome Trust sites.
Installation
Delivery of the modules to site is in line with the client’s overall project plan. With tight time-scales, SMT are often required to work during evenings and weekends to ensure that Interlink’s clients can occupy the modular buildings on schedule. The pre-fabricated modules can be 5 stories high and as each floor is completed, the dedicated SMT cabling team is required to install the structured cabling system. An average of 200 outlets are installed – but some buildings may have up to 700 – with a flexible design so that no matter what the office layout may be, each user is always within easy reach of voice and data outlets.
Wear and tear
Modular buildings are often supplied to building sites where day-to-day wear and tear could easily result in damage to cabling if installed incorrectly. Despite the sometimes relatively short occupancy of the buildings, the cabling must be installed as though the buildings were of a fixed nature, in order to provide the comprehensive SMT cabling warranty. Buildings are constructed with a main server room, which houses all the active equipment. Cabling is installed within the floor voices and a very limited amount of wall trunking.
